What would you do if the world was about to end, but your biggest problem was still keeping demanding holidaymakers happy? Roman Sands RE:Build explores that particularly strange scenario, blending resort-based service work with post-apocalyptic survival, unsettling horror and a healthy dose of surrealism.

The game launches today on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Welcome To The Resort At The End Of The World

Roman Sands RE:Build comes from Arbitrary Metric, the studio behind the IGF Award-winning Paratopic, and it certainly doesn’t appear interested in offering a conventional adventure.

The game begins with your arrival at an extravagant tropical resort. The guests believe you work there, and they aren’t particularly pleased with your performance. As you complete tasks, satisfy increasingly demanding customers and climb the employment ladder, you’ll earn equipment that helps you progress through the resort.

There is, however, a rather significant problem with your new workplace. The sun is only days away from consuming the world, yet the guests remain entirely focused on their holidays. While you attempt to keep the resort running, you’ll also need to investigate its hidden secrets, solve puzzles and find a way to escape.

The contrast between luxury hospitality and impending global destruction sets the tone for an experience that appears determined to make even the most ordinary workplace frustrations feel deeply unsettling.

A Second Story In A Dying Facility

The resort is only one part of Roman Sands RE:Build. The game also shifts into a separate narrative set within a decaying zoological research station, where you play as one of the last people left alive.

Your companions aren’t exactly ideal. Alongside a dead cow, you’ll have a voice on the radio for company – one that sounds strangely familiar. The station itself is suffering from a parasite that has clogged its internal systems, leaving you with a difficult choice. Do you destroy the parasite to preserve the facility’s remaining research, even if doing so puts your own survival at risk? Or is there another way to deal with the problem?

The facility story introduces a time-loop structure, adding another layer of mystery to a game already filled with questions about its setting, characters and chronology.

An Absurd Adventure With Plenty Of Questions

Roman Sands RE:Build brings together several different genres, including adventure games, visual novels, puzzle solving, survival simulation and atmospheric horror. Rather than keeping these elements separate, the game allows its two narratives to overlap and change in increasingly strange ways.

The result? That should be a story that asks whether the resort and research facility are connected, when their respective events are taking place, and exactly what kind of reality you’re experiencing.

With its combination of workplace satire, ecological collapse, mystery and horror, Roman Sands RE:Build looks set to offer something considerably more unpredictable than a typical end-of-the-world adventure. Xbox players are now able to explore both sides of its strange story as the game releases on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One (through the Xbox Store), alongside PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam).
