What the report says

Following my hands-on session with Stupid Never Dies at gamescom 2026, I had the opportunity to sit down with Director Eiichiro Sasaki to discuss the game's punk-rock aesthetics, unique combat mechanics, Unreal Engine 5 development, and expected completion time. You can find our full conversation below.NOTE: The interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.Q:How did you come up with the concept for Stupid Never Dies, and how do you feel it compares to similar action RPGs?A: The core action system itself is relatively standard, but what makes this game unique is that we incorporated a distinct time-limitation mechanic.

When creating a new experience, it’s crucial to narrow down what elements to focus on. In our case, we focused entirely on blending fast-paced action with that constant time pressure to bring something completely fresh to players.Q: Visually and sonically, Stupid Never Dies feels reminiscent of titles from Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture. Was that an intentional inspiration, particularly with the music?A: First of all, regarding the music, I love punk rock. That culture directly inspired how we built this world. The visual art style was heavily influenced by punk rock CD jacket art.

The overall graphical approach uses a lot of collage techniques, which stems directly from that aesthetic.Q: Speaking of that time limit, how did you balance making it feel like a meaningful pressure without completely overwhelming the player?A: Because Stupid Never Dies is an action RPG, your character parameters grow stronger the more you play. So through standard progression, any player will eventually be able to reach and defeat the final boss within the time limit. However, if you are highly skilled or master deck combinations, you can hit and defeat the final boss in a significantly shorter time.

Key details

Our main balancing objective was to ensure that every time someone plays, they feel like they are actively improving. The time limit exists to heighten that feeling of personal mastery.Q: One peculiar design choice is the complete lack of a lock-on targeting system. What drove that decision, and would you be open to adding it if players request it post-launch?A: The core design concept of Stupid Never Dies is fighting against pressure coming from multiple directions simultaneously. An enemy might attack from your right, requiring an immediate right punch, before another strikes from your left or behind. To make it seamless to attack in any direction at a moment's notice, we intentionally opted against a hard lock-on system.

The combat system was designed from the ground up around fighting freely across 360 degrees.Q: Running on Unreal Engine 5, the game feels noticeably smooth and well-optimized. What steps were taken during development to achieve that level of performance?A: When we started development, Unreal Engine 5 was completely new to our team, so we began from the very early stages of learning the engine's architecture. We worked hard to reach a high-performance standard for this launch, and that technical baseline will allow us to push the engine even further in future projects.Q: Having previously directed titles like Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil Outbreak, did you bring any specific lessons from those past zombie experiences into Stupid Never Dies?A: I simply love zombies as a concept.

There is so much potential in the zombie as a character archetype. Looking back at the history of undead media, zombies went from slow-moving corpses to fast, aggressive threats. There are endless ways to evolve their characteristics. With Davy in Stupid Never Dies, we wanted to explore a completely new, humorous side of what a zombie protagonist can be.Q: How long can players expect a standard playthrough of Stupid Never Dies to take, and is there post-game content?A: A standard playthrough takes roughly 20 to 30 hours, depending on individual player skill.
