Pyramid Head creator says he sacrificed his love life for Silent Hill

Silent Hill monster designer Masahiro Ito has opened up about the personal sacrifices he made while working on the horror series, admitting he may have been happier if he had prioritized his love life.

The Silent Hill series is known for creating some truly terrifying horrors, which still keep us up at night. I’m looking at you, Pyramid Head and creepy screaming doll child from Silent Hill f (you know the one).

Silent Hill’s most disturbing monsters owe much of their iconic looks to Masahiro Ito, who famously designed creatures and backgrounds for the original game before serving as art director and monster designer on Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3.

Despite his on-screen creations bringing many scares to horror fans across the globe, Ito has revealed that the series’ success came at a huge cost to his personal life.

Silent Hill monster designer opens up about personal life

In a post shared on his personal X account on September 4, Ito reflected on the eight years he spent developing the first three Silent Hill games at Konami.

“The 8 years I spent developing Silent Hill 1, 2 & 3 at Konami, I gave up on getting a girlfriend,” he wrote. “Never even went on a single date w/ a lady. I sacrificed my days off & slept on cardboard spread out on the floor, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined I’d end up like this on X."

The legendary designer then admitted that he has recently begun questioning whether this dedication and commitment to his work had been the right decision.

“To be honest, lately, I’ve been thinking that if I hadn’t sacrificed my personal life, found a girlfriend, and gotten married early on, I probably would have been happier,” he said.

“I'm 54 now, lol, so I've pretty much given up on getting married. Still, when I see people with their tiny kids at supermarkets or places like that, looking like they're really having a good time, I do feel a little envious,” the artist continued.

Since opening up about his personal life, Ito has received thousands of comments from fellow developers and fans, many of whom thanked him for his dedication to the series. Commenters have also told the 54-year-old designer not to give up on his quest for love, even though he feels defeated.

“Mr Ito, I admire your work and, as a 28-year-old artist, I too think about not sacrificing personal life or doing things differently, but I do believe things have a time to come. So rather than thinking you chose badly, think about what matters more now and go for it. Much love,” said one commenter.

“Ito-san, you are an amazing human being and artist, and I wish you all the happiness in the world. You created a huge milestone in game art direction that will be remembered forever, and hopefully soon, you will accomplish your dream with someone who deserves someone special like you,” replied another.

The words of encouragement haven’t fallen on deaf ears either, as Ito posted a reply thanking those who reached out to him.

“Thank you SO SO MUCH for all the encouraging replies. There were so many I couldn’t even read them all! Some of you guys even offered words of encouragement even though things aren’t going well for [yourself] at all. I truly hope you all find happiness!”

This isn't the first time someone close to the Silent Hill has given an honest account of how the game has impacted their life. Back in June 2025, the actress and model behind Silent Hill f’s protagonist, Hinako Shimizu, revealed that she could feel her sanity almost “slipping” while portraying the high school student.
